Dear Pendragon,
Living in the UK, unfortunately, I waited many years to get my hands on a copy of this film, being a huge fan of H G Wells and having read the original story as a boy, after the Hollywood version hit the cinemas in the early 1950s.
For one thing, I was refused a copy from your DVD resellers because I was not living on mainland USA but finally, a couple of months ago I managed to get a second hand Region 1 copy from Amazon USA.
I had seen a few clips on You Tube so I was almost prepared for the 'style and culture' of the film's presentation...
However, I do feel that the general style of the film is neither fish nor fowl. A strange pastiche of mock Victorian posturing, as a droll comedy of stilted manners and at times laughable 'unspecial' effects redolent of the 1960s. It felt like a 'no budget' film which had experienced a talent bypass. By the end I had no sense of connection with the actors and desperately wanted the Martians to win - they seemed more alive than the humans, paradoxically.
I hope for mercy's sake CHROME is a more cohesive effort, when it finally breaks the surface. If you want gritty acting with a sense of desolate futuristic landscape - watch Rutger Hauer in 'Salute of The Jugger' for a sense of realism.
